Grazing and Mowing Services

The peak work period on the farm is mid May to the end of June. Our equipment and labor may not be available for bushogging or hay making during that time. Please call 540-592-3701 or e-mail me about availability.

Bushogging
$71.50 per hour. Using a 15 foot batwing rotary Woods mower. Minimum of 20 acres. Not advisable on rocky or very steep land which should be cut with a small and slower sickle mower which we can arrange. Bushogging will not qualify for the land use tax deduction which is set up to encourage farming.
We usually do this work in our neighborhood of Delaplane, Paris, and Upperville.

Grazing Cattle

Grazing
Variable rent paid depending on condition and size of farm - 30 acre minimum suggested. Grazing with cattle is the natural and traditional way to manage grass in our community. Cattle are very hardy and usually not bothered by predators. The pastoral look of the land today is dependent on grazing animals, especially cattle. Grazing requires good fences, a water source, and a pen to load and unload cattle is helpful. Mowing or spraying for weeds is usually required every other year. Grazing is a better and cheaper way to manage land than mowing alone if the land is fenced. It qualifies for land use tax, and is an excellent way to utilize fescue grass, especially in the late fall and winter months when it becomes palatable and very nutritious. With good fencing, neighboring estates can band together to create farmer-friendly grazing areas that could be used in a rotational, intensive grazing plan.
